Who We Are
Family Success by Design (FSbD) is a collaborative, community-based organization with a mission to improve the lives of families and children with significant education, health or economic risk factors. The organization’s unique approach comes from its base in occupational therapy and occupational science, which view people as needing “occupations” – valued life activities – to promote and maintain health and wellness. FSbD services are not gender or ethnic specific, but need driven.

What We Do
Mentorship Conferences:
The annual Ánimo™ Latino Young Men’s Conference is now in its 6th year and services over 600 people at each event. The conference is designed to encourage its participants (ages 12-17) – with the help of mentors – to lead successful, healthy lives and aspire to a higher education.
The Black & Brown Youth Summit was held for the first time on April 4th in Pasadena, California to help start a dialogue between our diverse youth groups to promote unity and cultural appreciation.
Occupational Therapy and Case Management
FSbD has found a serious need for occupational therapy and occupational science in domestic violence survivor’s recovery: It is a valuable tool to help develop the goal-oriented skills needed for successful and fulfilled living. With the collaboration of mental-health experts, FSbD uses occupational therapy to address the dynamic range of these clients’ lives: their social participation, work, education and self-awareness.
Outreach
FSbD aims to touch any who might benefit from its experience at helping design successful and productive lives. Therefore, FSbD does outreach work with youth in juvenile justice systems, foster care kids and at continuation schools, among others.

The Need
FSbD has found that the greatest common denominator among clients is that they have a single-parent home (or a home-placement) background. Did you know that 20 million children live in a home with just one parent? In fact 30% of Latino children live with one parent. This means that a generation of kids will join the adult population with a significant disadvantage in basic life skills.
The effect of Latino young men with single parents is considerable:
- Latino young men are 7 times more likely to go to prison than their white counterparts
- Latino children with only one parent are twice as likely to drop out of high school
- Children from homes with one biological parent are more likely to become teenage parents
- Latino children and youth in the child welfare system are over-represented in out-of-home placements, with percentages in placement as high as 56% in New Mexico, 32% in Connecticut, 31% in California AND Texas, and 27% in Arizona
